Altbier

"Altbier, usually also simply called Alt, is a dark, top-fermented beer." Altbier is a bitter beer with an average alcohol content of 4 to 5 percent. It originated from the rebellious stance of some brewmasters in the Lower Rhine region during the 19th century. The 19th century was the era of lager beer, and thus the era of bottom-fermenting brewing methods. Many brewers saw the tradition of beer culture threatened and resisted this trend in favor of the old, top-fermenting brewing method. The "Alt" in Altbier refers to the old, in the sense of the original fermentation process. It is often claimed that the name derives from the Latin word "altus," which translates to "high" and thus refers to top-fermenting brewing methods. However, this derivation does not correspond to the origin of the name Altbier. Today, Altbier is a kind of emblem, especially in Düsseldorf, Krefeld, and Mönchengladbach, and is also the most consumed type of beer .
