SOMMERPAUSE

Tilted Barn Brewery

Hello! We are Kara and Matt Richardson, owners of Tilted Barn Brewery, Rhode Island's first farm brewery. Together with our amazing Barn Crew team, we've been brewing beer on our family farm in Exeter, Rhode Island, since 2014. It's been an incredible adventure, and we're so excited to share our passion with you all! Our roots are in agriculture, but we've grown to where we never imagined four simple ingredients like water, grain, yeast, and hops would lead us. Thank you for supporting our love of beer and being a part of our story!

In 2007, we founded Ocean State Hops, Rhode Island's first commercial hop farm, driven by a passion for packing as much hops as possible into every batch of beer and supplying other brewers who wanted to quench their thirst for hops. Over the years, we've enjoyed supplying hops to both local homebrewers and commercial breweries. This endeavor gave us the idea to open our own brewery on the family farm.

After several experimental homebrewing batches, it was time for us to transform our centuries-old barn into what would later become known as the original Tilted Barn. Having converted the main part of the barn into our tasting room and the adjoining former horse stables into our production area, we had a wonderful place to establish our own brewery.
The motivation behind Tilted Barn Brewery has always been to continue Kara's family's farming tradition while adding our own modern twist to craft beer and the art of brewing. A visit to our farm brewery is more than just a typical brewery experience. Brewery visitors get to see firsthand what goes into each batch of our handcrafted beer. They'll learn not only about the history of farming in our region, but also about hop cultivation throughout New England (Matt could talk about it for hours...).

As you stroll through the fields and gaze across our tranquil farm, you can appreciate the fruits of our labor. Our original barn served us well, and we'll never forget the joy it brought us, but now it's once again a barn on a farm. Our adventure has since taken us up the hill to a new and exciting chapter in our story, moving into our spacious, 10,000-square-foot, authentic New England-style post-and-beam barn, built for us by the incredible team at South County Post & Beam, just down the road.

After several years of planning and construction, which began during a pandemic, we moved Tilted Barn Brewery up the hill to our new barn in November 2020. It was important to us to maintain the same peaceful, old-fashioned feel that people had when visiting our original barn by adhering to an authentic New England-style post-and-beam construction, albeit on a slightly larger scale this time. With a spacious tasting room, including a mezzanine overlooking our new 30-barrel brewery, where we offer up to 19 different beers on tap, we are thrilled to offer you a larger space to share our passion. We hope that Tilted Barn Brewery provides you with a unique and memorable experience, while also helping to revive the long-lost tradition of New England farm breweries.
