Witbier

Witbier

A yeasty, old beer style from Belgium. This beer style disappeared in the 1950s and was revived in the 1960s by milkman Peter Celis. With the Hoegaarden brewery he founded, this beer type regained popularity.

This top-fermented beer is brewed with approximately half unmalted wheat and half barley malt, and flavored with orange peel and coriander. Hops are added sparingly to provide the necessary basic bitterness. The result is a mild and fruity-spicy beer, which, due to its low alcohol content (typically under 5%), is refreshing and thirst-quenching.

Because the crisp, citrusy witbiers are so popular, they are now brewed almost everywhere in the world. And remarkably often, "adaptations" of this beer style are brewed with local citrus fruits and/or alternative spices. For example, Westbrook offers a White Thai beer ("Thai-Wit") with lemongrass, ginger, and Sorachi Ace hops.
