The basis of this beer specialty is the Shanco Dubh Porter from the Brehon Brewhouse in Ireland. This porter is a mahogany-colored beer specialty with a wonderfully dark aroma and strong roasted notes.

To crown their already delicious creation, the brewers decided on a small experiment: instead of bottling the finished porter, they filled it into used whiskey barrels and placed them in the cellar for aging. Shanco Dubh usually matures in the bottle, but now, encased in aromatic wood, it can develop to its full potential. The wooden barrels had been used for years to produce whiskey and, in the process, had absorbed the fine aromas of the precious spirit.

The barrel-aged version of Shanco Dubh Porter presents itself in the glass with a deep, black mahogany hue and is crowned with a small amount of creamy foam. The gentle carbonation sends fine bubbles from the bottom of the glass to the surface, releasing a wonderfully robust aroma. On the nose, roasted malt meets soft caramel and subtly spicy whiskey. On the palate, a full body unfolds with a velvety mouthfeel and a cornucopia of dark flavors. Smooth chocolate, candied red fruits, roasted malt, and rich liqueur caress the palate. A hint of vanilla and the unmistakable flavor imparted by the oak barrel complete the aromatic profile. The finish is crisply bitter and perfectly complements the sweet richness of the body.
